| dc.description.abstract | The study of socio-spatial inequalities and residential segregation processes is one of the most established lines of research in urban geography. Traditionally, these studies have relied on statistical methods to analyse differentiated residential patterns based on socioeconomic, national, and/or ethnic profiles of the population. Starting from the premise that current segregation dynamics in Spain increasingly manifest in explicit spatial forms and exhibit a more complex structure, this research challenges the notion of the city as a unified entity. Instead, it brings an urban fragmentation process that affects multiple dimensions of the urban fabric and transcends conventional administrative boundaries. In this context, the present study proposes an analytical approach to new dimensions of urban fragmentation, drawing on the methodological framework developed by Lasala and Bellet (2024), and adapted to the Barcelona metropolitan area. This approach shifts the focus from the internal composition of statistical units to the boundaries defined by census tracts and their discontinuities. Using multivariate statistical analysis, it integrates traditional socioeconomic indicators with novel variables that reflect urban morphology and residential characteristics. The aim is to identify a typology of boundaries and edges that characterize the current state of urban fragmentation at a detailed spatial scale. The findings reveal an expansion and deepening of socio-spatial differentiation processes, strongly linked to morphological and housing dimensions in both central and metropolitan areas. Finally, the study assesses whether this approach allows for the identification of distinct urban fragments and thus provides a more accurate understanding of the multidimensional and spatial footprint of urban fragmentation. | |
