    Generative artificial intelligence use in nursing bachelor's theses: A qualitative study of students' technology integration and learning

    Aim: To explore nursing students' generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) related practices during Bachelor Thesis (BT) preparation and to analyse their levels of technology integration, links with learning, and perceived barriers and facilitators. Methods: This descriptive qualitative study adopted a constructivist approach. Participants were 66 final-year nursing students who reported using GenAI tools during the preparation and defense of the BT. Data were collected using a qualitative open-ended questionnaire and analysed using thematic analysis. Findings were interpreted using the SAMR model (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition). Results: GenAI use spanned different levels of technology integration. At the Substitution and Augmentation levels, it primarily supported language correction, refinement of academic tone, and reference management. At the Modification and Redefinition levels, it supported critical reflection, knowledge reorganisation, integration of complex information, and co-creation of student-produced artefacts, with reports of a transformed learning experience. Nevertheless, students expressed concerns about the reliability of the information generated, the need for verification, and the ethical implications of using these tools. Conclusions: GenAI significantly shapes how nursing students construct knowledge and develop academic practice in the BT. When integrated more fully, it may support autonomy and critical thinking, provided its use remains reflective, ethically grounded and aligned with the discipline's educational objectives. These findings have implications for curriculum design, academic supervision and pedagogical approaches that encourage responsible GenAI use in nursing education.

    Hydration and Dehydration Prevention in Nursing Homes: Perspectives, Barriers, and Practices of Care Teams and Managers

    Background: Low-intake dehydration is frequent among institutionalised older adults and is associated with high morbidity–mortality and healthcare costs. Its prevention requires effective strategies and professional and institutional coordination. Objective: This study aims to explore the knowledge on the identification and prevention of dehydration, as well as the management of hydration by healthcare professionals and management in a nursing home. Methods: This exploratory qualitative study with a phenomenological approach convened two focus groups with 18 nurses and assistants alongside two semi-structured interviews with managers. The content analysis addressed five dimensions: knowledge; identification of dehydration; prevention of dehydration; barriers and facilitators; and actions proposed to improve hydration. Results: Participants recognised the importance of hydration but reported barriers including limited training, absence of specific protocols, and imprecise record systems. Facilitators included hydration reminders, improved accessibility to water, sensorial resources, promotion of independence, social activities, and institutional support for preventive strategies. Conclusions: These findings show that preventing and managing dehydration in nursing homes is complex and can be influenced by organisational and structural factors. The nursing team plays a central role in detecting dehydration early and implementing personalised strategies to promote fluid intake, while managerial support strengthens their effectiveness. Improving staff training, developing practical guidelines, and refining record systems may help address the identified barriers and enhance person-centred hydration management aligned with residents’ needs.

    From Theory to Practice: A Methodology Article Describing the Eight-Stage Health Education Planning Instrument in Community Health Education

    Background/Objectives: This methodology article describes the development and application of a structured planning instrument for community health education interventions. Community health education can strengthen population preparedness against respiratory threats beyond COVID-19 by improving knowledge, attitudes, and practices. The aim was to describe the development and implementation of the Eight-Stage Health Education Planning Instrument as applied in a community health education intervention aimed at improving preventive behaviors against COVID-19. Methods: A systematic, theory-based, and practice-oriented process was followed. Planning was guided by an Eight-Stage Health Education Planning Instrument. Conceptual models (ASE model, TTM, and I-Change model) were used to identify target determinants, and the Behavior Change Wheel guided the mapping stage from determinants to intervention functions and techniques. Results: The community health education intervention, developed using the Eight-Stage Health Education Planning Instrument, was named “Rethinking COVID-19” and consisted of a two-hour, in-person workshop combining brief didactic content with interactive components across three blocks: hand hygiene, healthy lifestyle, and emotional coping. Delivery procedures were predefined to ensure fidelity. The first two workshops served as formative pilots, allowing for the refinement of materials and procedures. Adjustments were guided by facilitator observations, immediate debriefs, participant satisfaction data, and one-word feedback descriptors. Conclusions: This methodology article presents the Eight-Stage Health Education Planning Instrument, a structured yet adaptable framework for the design, implementation, and evaluation of community health education programs. Its systematic stages provide an effective means of integrating theory, evidence, and community context. The “Rethinking COVID-19” intervention illustrates how the instrument standardizes planning while remaining responsive to local needs and emerging challenges. By incorporating behavioral models and clearly distinguishing between evaluation and follow-up, it strengthens methodological rigor and supports institutionalization.

    Electrolyte Imbalance and Indirect Indicators of Dehydration in Temporary Agricultural Workers Exposed to Extreme Heat in the Mediterranean: An Observational Study on Environmental Health Risks

    Background: Climate change is intensifying extreme heat exposure in Mediterranean agricultural systems. Migrant workers engaged in outdoor fieldwork are a highly vulnerable population with limited access to resources. Crucially, there is a notable lack of data on how heat affects these workers in this specific region. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the physiological effects of high-temperature exposure by quantifying and correlating indirect indicators of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance (sodium and potassium losses, sweat, body weight, and blood pressure). Methods: An observational study was conducted over nine consecutive days involving ten agricultural participants, yielding 90 observations. Measurements of body weight, heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, sweat loss, and sodium and potassium concentrations were taken before, during, and after daily field activity. Results: Results showed considerable interindividual variability in thermophysiological responses. Participants lost an average of 0.8 kg (range –9.1 to +3.6 kg) and produced 3.91 L of sweat (range 1.9–6.4 L), with sodium and potassium losses of 4932 mg and 646 mg, respectively. Sweat loss correlated with sodium (r = 0.414, p = 0.001) and potassium (r = 0.791, p < 0.001), and diastolic blood pressure was moderately associated with weight loss (r = 0.576, p = 0.016). Conclusions: Sweat loss was the main driver of electrolyte depletion, with marked interindividual variability. Monitoring sweat-related indicators and diastolic blood pressure could help detect dehydration risk in agricultural workers exposed to extreme heat. Targeted hydration strategies and occupational health education are essential to mitigate these risks.

    Pedagogy of death within the framework of health education: The need and why teachers and students should be trained in primary education

    The objective of the present study is to analyze the perceptions of in-service teachers about Pedagogy of Death within the framework of Health Education (HE), with respect to the training received and their teaching experience. A quantitative method was utilized, with the design of an ad hoc questionnaire with a Likert-type response scale and dichotomous questions. The results showed that while the teachers were aware of the need to educationally address death and health, they lacked or did not have initial or continuous training for doing so, and had not thought about it as a normalized aspect throughout their teaching career. We believe it is necessary to offer more training on Pedagogy of Death in the area of HE at universities and continuous education centers, so that it can ultimately be implemented in Primary Education classrooms.
