- ItemOpen AccessChild welfare and successful reunification: understanding of the family difficulties during the socio-educative process(Lumen Publishing House, 2013) Balsells, M. Àngels; Pastor Vicente, Crescencia; Molina, María Cruz; Fuentes-Peláez, Núria; Vaquero Tió, Eduard; Mundet Bolós, AnnaFamily reunification, in terms of the system of infancy protection, is the process by which a child returns to his/her biological family after a period of temporary foster care. The scientific literature and the new social policies share the understanding that socio-educative action with the biological family is an essential requisite for family reunion. Despite this agreement, socio-educative processes during family reunification have received little attention up till now. This paper presents the results of an investigation conducted by the GRISIJ group concerning one of the most important elements in the process of reunification: the ability to gain understanding into a family’s difficulty, which is known as “insight”. This investigation collects information from 135 people, 62 of which are child welfare professionals in the Spanish territory, 42 are fathers and mothers who have experienced a process of reunification and 30 are children and adolescents who have been through a foster care situation; all distributed in 13 focus groups and 20 interviews. Qualitative results have been analysed using the technique of analysis of content. The results show a gradual process for the acquisition of this skill, which involves different aspects: awareness of the problem (understanding and assimilation of the reasons that caused the removal); understanding of the reunification, comprehension of the reasons for the reunification; comprehension of the reunification process; awareness of the changes made and awareness of the progress in consolidating family reunification.
- ItemOpen AccessThe biological family from the perspective of kinship fostered adolescents(Colegio Oficial de Psicólogos del Principado de Asturias, 2013) Fuentes-Peláez, Núria; Amorós, Pere; Mateos Inchaurrondo, Ainoa; Balsells, M. Àngels; Violant, VerónicaPrevious studies emphasise the importance of the biological family to the welfare of fostered adolescents. However, the majority of these studies only take into consideration the viewpoints of the professionals, foster parents and biological parents, not those of the adolescents themselves. For this reason little is known about the perceptions the adolescents have and the needs they express. Method: This study has gathered data from 57 adolescents in kinship family foster care in Spain (AFE). The study applied qualitative reseach, using focus groups to gather data, and the Atlas.ti programme to analyse the data. The qualitative data give us a more profound understanding of how the fostered adolescents relate to their biological families. Results: The results highlight the specific needs of these adolescents with regard to: a) understanding of their family history, b) the impact of visits from and relationship with their biological family, and c) the relationship between the biological family and the foster family. Conclusions: These findings reveal implications to consider when creating support programmes aimed at this group.
- ItemOpen AccessSexual health promotion in high social risk adolescents: the view of ‘professionals’(Lumen Publishing House, 2013) Molina, María Cruz; Amorós, Pere; Balsells, M. Àngels; Jané, Mireia; Vidal, María José; Díez, EliaTeenage pregnancy rates and STIs have lately risen all over Europe. In Catalonia, figures have started to improve slightly because of a joint effort by all health and social agents involved in promoting healthy habits. Effective intervention must be accompanied by scientifically proven actions which must be present in educational curricula and in health plans and must also require family involvement. Our qualitative study aimed at exploring programmes and experiences targeted at young people as well as analyzing innovative proposals which would address teenagers’ needs; it also aimed at understanding weaknesses and strengths identified by professionals who work with vulnerable youths. We used 6 focus groups: 2 involved with immigrants, 2 from deprived areas and 2 from youth care homes with a total of 48 participants. They all stated the importance of combining initiatives within educational, community and health contexts. They also deemed necessary to come up with new organizational strategies which would facilitate coordination of services and resources available as well as the necessity to devise a common curriculum. They also believe in implementing more motivating and innovative strategies to attract teenagers and in the necessity for monitoring programmes in order to increase their effectiveness particularly those programmes aimed at youths who can’t access health or educational services.

- ItemOpen AccessImplementation and evaluation of the “learning together, growing in family programme”: the impact on the families(Lumen Publishing House, 2013) Amorós, Pere; Balsells, M. Àngels; Buisan, Montserrat; Byrne, Sonia; Fuentes-Peláez, NúriaThe article looks at the characteristics of the programme and its application and evaluation. We have chosen a mixed methodological focus that is characterised by a research process that collects analyses and links quantitative and qualitative data, as well as its integration and joint discussion, to achieve a greater understanding of the phenomenon under study. The application has been under- taken with 1,834 people of whom 1,270 have undertaken the programme (609 parents and 661 children), and 564 (296 parents and 268 children) formed part of the control group. The results show that after the programme the strict (authoritarian) style, permissive style, criticism and rejection have decreased and paren- tal affection and communication have increased. There has been an increase in leisure activities undertaken in the family, both in everyday and special activities, satisfaction with family life has improved and there has been greater community integration along with learning processes of an emotional, behavioural and cog- nitive nature. We describe proposals for change to improve the efficiency of the programme by means of going deeper into the subject matter of the programme and the creation of reference bodies to establish networking with the small entities, attending to the largest number of families possible within the characteristics of the programme.

- ItemOpen AccessPromoting resilience through technology, art and a child rights-based approach(Expert Projects Publishing House, 2014) Vaquero Tió, Eduard; Urrea Monclús, Aida; Mundet Bolós, AnnaThe concept of resilience is widely used in many fields as a frame of reference. It is generally understood to be a capacity which a person, group, subject or system can develop when facing a situation affecting integrity, enabling them to hold up, recover and come out of it stronger. Resilience is considered as a crosssectional study in which more and more areas of knowledge find a positive way to address and raise new studies. This article considers the concept of resilience from an ecological perspective and looks at how it can be promoted and developed through technology, art and a child rights-based approach. Finally, some conclusions and suggestions are made to continue the study of resilience
- ItemOpen AccessChild welfare and successful reunification through the socio-educative process: needs to training of biological familiy in Spain(MDPI - Open Access Publishing, 2014) Balsells, M. Àngels; Pastor Vicente, Crescencia; Amorós, Pere; Mateos Inchaurrondo, Ainoa; Ponce, Carmen; Navajas Hurtado, AliciaIn Spain, an average of 480 children per 100,000 is receiving some type of temporary care, and the reunification process is typically lengthy. Providing the biological family with specific training as part of the reunification process is key to solving this problem. Although previous research and social policy have emphasized the importance of such training to reunification, the training has not been fully implemented in Spain. This study investigates the specific training needs during the transition phase of the reunification process in which the child prepares to return home. The data were obtained from focus groups and through semi-structured interviews with 135 participants: 63 professionals from the Child Protection System and 42 parents and 30 children who have undergone or are currently undergoing reunification. A qualitative methodology and Atlas.ti software were used to analyze the interview content. The results indicate three specific training needs: (a) understanding the reasons for reunification and the reunification phases; (b) empowerment strategies; and (c) social support. These findings suggest the best practices for formulating specific support programs for this population during the reunification transition period.
