What is OpenCourseWare (OCW)?

OpenCourseWare is a worldwide free and open initiative whose aim is to provide free access to course materials taught at faculties. It was created in 2001 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) thanks to the contribution of The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The UdL joins the initiative OpenCourseWare Consortium, a worldwide community of universities and associated organizations. The mission of this consortium is to improve education and promote self-learning by providing open access to knowledge without restrictions. The objectives are:

  • to provide free, easy and consistent access to course materials for teachers in non-profit institutions, students and self-taught learners around the world,
  • and to create a flexible movement based on an efficient model that can be emulated by other universities when publishing educational materials, thus generating synergies and collaboration among faculties.

What is UdL OpenCourseWare (UdL OCW)?

UdL OCW is an open access repository that provides access to educational materials produced in the Universitat de Lleida. In order to promote free and open access to knowledge, UdL OCW offers all course materials free to anyone with access to the internet.

UdL OCW goals are:

  • To provide access and increase the use of course materials produced in UdL.
  • To create a repository of quality teaching materials.
  • To ensure intellectual property and recognition of authors and to increase their visibility and accessibility through the internet.
  • To collect, classify and guarantee the preservation of teaching materials produced in UdL.

Is OCW a virtual learning environment?

No, UdL OCW is not a virtual campus. Therefore, no forums, e-mail and other interactive tools between professors and students are available.

Free access to course materials is provided by UdL OCW. There is no need to enroll any subject nor to pay any fee for the service.

Do I need to register to access UdL OCW course materials?

No, there is no registration process required for users to view and use UdL OCW course materials. UdL OCW is available on the Web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world.

What types of educational materials are available in UdL OCW?

Mainly the educational materials available are course materials produced by professors in their teaching activities, and also course program, reading materials, teaching material used for lectures or practical exercises, problems, practices, test models, etc.

Can I get a certificate after completing these subjects?

No, UdL OCW is a publication of the course materials at UdL, not a degree-granting or credit-bearing initiative.

How do I find what subjects are available?

There are different ways to access the subjects:

  • Locating them in the left menu.
  • Clicking on the option “subjects” in the top navigation menu to view the list of currently available subjects.
  • Looking for them through the search box.
  • Subscribing to UdL OCW RSS.

Who owns the intellectual property of the materials?

The intellectual property of all course materials is owned by the authors. UdL has the not exclusive, free and worldwide assignment of exploitation rights for a certain period of time. Authors should guarantee that all contents in UdL OCW are free of rights.

What are the license conditions in UdL OCW?

All subjecys in UdL OCW are published under a Creative Commons license (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike).

You are free:

  • to share (copy, distribute and transmit the work)
  • to remix (adapt the work) under the following conditions:
    • Attribution: You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).
    • Non-Commercial: You may not use this work for commercial purposes.
    • Share Alike: If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one.

How do I contact a professor whose course materials are published in UdL OCW?

UdL OCW is intended as a publication of UdL course materials that can be accessed freely for non-commercial uses, not as an interactive experience with UdL faculty.

Who is addressed UdL OCW to?

UdL OCW is addressed to self-taught users, students of similar subjects at other universities or schools, prospective students or faculty professors and generally anybody interested on UdL OCW course materials and connected to the internet. Contents are free and no registration is required to view the course materials available.

How do I properly cite UdL OCW materials?

If you choose to reuse or repost UdL OCW materials you should cite them to give proper attribution to the original faculty author(s). The following citation in recommended by MIT-OCW in the Cite/Attribute OCW content webpage:
